This position is created by a Partnership with the Wastewater Treatment Program at Santa Rosa Junior College to work with the ENGIE and the City of American Canyon Wastewater Department to gain necessary experience and training in wastewater operations and management.



What you’ll do:

The position will work with the City for sixty (60) hours. The intern learns the operation, maintenance, and repair of various machinery and equipment through diversified experience and on-the-job training in order to become a fully skilled plant operator, qualified for transition to the Plant Operator I class after one year. The intern will work under immediate and close supervision of a Plant Operator II or higher position.

  • Assist in operating plant equipment systems, including making equipment and process adjustments, locally, remotely, and through the plant computer control system in accordance with plant procedures.
  • Assist in inspecting, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing equipment and systems involved in the water and wastewater treatment and associated processes to include: perform scheduled maintenance and operations checks of water/wastewater systems and associated equipment; perform scheduled lubrication, cleaning of channels, tanks and sumps, repacking of pumps, and installation of seals and bearings; and inspect, remove repair, and install pumps, motors, multi-reduction gearboxes, hydraulic drives, chain and sprocket assemblies, gas compressors, chemical handling and oxygen injection systems, and related components.
  • Keep work records and prepare reports.
  • Collect water/wastewater samples, perform plant control tests, and record results.
  • Operate mobile equipment such as forklifts, lifts, and cranes.
  • Enter, maintain, and extract information from various computer software programs such as the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and work order systems.
  • Perform general clean-up of tools, equipment, and work areas.
  • Carries out other duties as assigned


What you bring:

  • Current student in good standing (transcripts may be requested) at Santa Rosa Junior College
    • Students currently enrolled in the Wastewater Treatment Operations, Wastewater Treatment Certificate, or Wastewater Operator Certificate Program

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment
  • Must have a reliable mode of transportation to travel to and from office location, client sites and construction sites.
  • U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency is required
  • For this position, you must have evidence of right to work in the U.S. There is no employer sponsorship of U.S. residency or work authorization with this role
  • Ability to meet highest attendance requirements
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to use a personal computer, calculator, etc.
  • Could involve some lifting
  • Mobility: frequent performance of heavy manual labor; frequent standing for long periods of time; frequent bending and squatting
  • Dexterity: frequent grasping, holding, and reaching
