The Technical Accounting team is developing the accounting and financial reporting processes to inform ENGIE's strategic decisions as we lead The Energy Transition. This role would be perfect for a Big 4 manager in technical accounting advisory looking to make their first move into industry.


The Senior Advisor, Technical Accounting, is a critically important team member who is responsible for technical accounting processes, including mergers, acquisitions, restructurings, divestiture support, financial reporting, accounting for derivatives, and accounting research, external audit support, and meeting partnership reporting needs. 


What you’ll do:

  • Identifies, clarifies, and communicates modeling and financial impact of technical issues for ENGIE’s North America (NorAm) businesses and business development projects as part of the NorAm Technical Accounting Team
  • Supervises and reviews monthly derivative accounting processes
  • Responsible for the documentation of hedge accounting relationships under IFRS and USGAAP, including its application, including calculation of ineffectiveness, and deferred tax implications
  • Reviews and prepares derivative and other footnote disclosures for ENGIE and ENGIE's partnerships
  • Prepares complex contract assessments and reviews assessments of less complex contracts to determine proper accounting, including revenue recognition, if they meet the definition of a derivative, contain leases, or have other accounting or disclosure implications
  • Prepares purchase price allocations for acquisitions or coordinates the process with external advisors, including reconciliation with investment case models
  • Performs technical accounting research and prepares accounting analysis documentation
  • Provides leadership and development to the Senior Technical Accountants and provides technical accounting training to ENGIE's accounting team
  • Supports the implementation of new and emerging IFRS accounting standards
  • Designs and refines the month-end Microsoft Access database to achieve efficiencies in the close and footnote disclosure process
  • Leads compliance of internal controls for the scope of responsibility, particularly within derivative and hedge accounting and business development processes
  • Provides suggestions for internal control improvements and designs internal control processes for changing business activities affecting derivative and hedge accounting and technical accounting matters
  • Carries out other duties and requests as assigned


What you bring:

  • Master's degree required, in Accounting or MIS preferred
  • 10-15 years relevant experience required
  • 2+ years with Big 4 a plus
  • CPA or equivalent (such as a Chartered Accountant) is required
  • Prior experience in understanding electricity and natural gas markets preferred
  • Strong customer service skills, primarily to internal customers
  • Experience with advising commercial teams on contracts and transactions, including working with ENGIE's valuation team on modeling IFRS and USGAAP accounting impacts
  • Strong knowledge of and research skills in International Financial Reporting Standards and US GAAP.  Experience with:
    • IFRS 9/ASC 815: Derivatives and Hedging
    • IFRS 16/ASC 842: Leasing
    • IFRS 15/ASC 606: Revenue Recognition
    • IFRS 10/ASC 810: Consolidation
    • IFRS 11/ASC 323: Joint Arrangements
    • The proposed AICPA Statement of Position on hypothetical liquidation at book value (HLBV) is preferred
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Access
  • Communicate effectively, written and verbal with internal customers and external auditors
  • Convey complex accounting issues in a manner for all audiences to understand
  • Identify significant accounting issues and prioritize work tasks accordingly
  • Ability to manage multiple projects across different business lines and departments
  • Deadline driven and ability to plan to ensure smooth close processes
  • Hands-on and able to step in to assist staff as needed
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to handle multiple assignments and projects across different business lines and departments with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to meet highest attendance requirements
  • Must be able at times to work outside of usual US business hours
