ENGIE is looking for an engineering professional to join our team. The DER Engineer is a subject matter expert for the technical implementation of microgrids. In this role, you will interface with internal teams, customers, and OEMs to streamline the process to design, implement, commission, and monitor microgrids. The DER Engineer may manage other team members as they perform their duties, as well. The DER Engineer will interact with his or her supervisor as needed. Most activities will be completed without a supervisor’s direct oversight. This role reports to the Project Management Director, Southern California.


What you’ll do:

  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert for the technical implementation of microgrids
  • Develop documentation to educate customers and internal teams about microgrid functionality
  • Support assessment of potential microgrid applications that arise in the sales process
  • Work with customers, internal teams, and OEMs to optimize the microgrid design through workshops and modeling
  • Standardize and streamline the process for design, implementation, commissioning, and monitoring of microgrids
  • Scope and support development of tools to facilitate scaling of microgrid deployments
  • Act as the technical point of contact both internally and externally with OEMs throughout the sales and implementation process.
  • Understand, define, and disseminate functional requirements and feedback from OEMs, coordinating with internal sales and engineering team members
  • Support microgrid commissioning by writing specifications and test plans, driving test execution, and documenting results.
  • Troubleshoot issues and implement fixes on operational sites.
  • Create tools and training that empower service teams to troubleshoot issues encountered during operation
  • Manage time between multiple projects to meet deadlines
  • Carry out other duties as assigned


What you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline required
  • 3+ years relevant work experience
  • Technical and hands-on experience with battery storage systems and PV inverters required
  • Demonstrated application of analysis, design, and testing to solve complex engineering problems
  • Strong team-oriented personality
  • Creativity, passion, and a desire to break new ground in a constantly shifting technology landscape
  • Working knowledge of identifying and analyzing Solar Photovoltaic, Battery Energy Storage, and Microgrid measures
  • Strong understanding of key considerations around paralleling multiple AC sources: synchronization, voltage vs current sources, load sharing, Var control, droop control, frequency management, protection coordination, etc.
  • Familiarity with relevant communication protocols: MODBUS, DNP3, protection relay configuration, etc.
  • Prior experience working for an electric utility, OEM, or energy services type of company
  • Strong knowledge of California Utility rate schedules (electric, gas, water)
  • Proficient at conducting surveys, preparing/analyzing savings and cost estimates of solar PV, BESS, and microgrid controls
  • Proficient at computer modeling/simulation of microgrid operation and utility profiles (Energy Tool Base, PVSyst, Homer, XENDEE, REopt Lite, or similar)
  • Proficient at preparing solar PV, BESS, and/or microgrid control design specifications
  • Professional Engineering License a plus

  • Ability to Travel  30% - 50%  of the time
  • Ability to meet highest attendance requirements
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to use a personal computer, calculator, etc.
  • Could involve some lifting
