First Hydro Company, part of ENGIE THERMAL EUROPE in the UK, is currently looking for a Head of EC&I Engineering.

First Hydro is about to embark on an exciting period of major refurbishment. As a result, we have an opportunity for a Head of EC&I Engineering to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the Engineering team. This role will be mainly based at Dinorwig Power Station in the UK (LL55 4TY).


Job Overview


We are seeking a motivated and committed individual to lead, develop and supervise a team of professional specialist engineers. The principal objective of the role is to create and deliver the discipline asset engineering and maintenance strategy, within resource and financial guidelines.

The post holder shall ensure the safe operation, engineering health, integrity and performance of the assets in an efficient and sustainable manner, maximising the commercial benefit within legal requirements.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop and manage the EC&I function in the Engineering team and be part of what will be a very exciting refurbishment period at First Hydro.


YOUR Key accountabilities


Project Management

You will lead, prioritise plan and deliver a range of major plant & business development, refurbishment, maintenance and replacement projects, which could be multi-disciplined, involving multiple organisations, within assigned financial and resource budgets; contributing individual expertise and guiding the team as appropriate.


Resource Management

You will be responsible for planning, directing, organising and managing team, contractor and consultant resources.


Contract Management

You will assess, specify, select, negotiate, ensure compliance, vary (VI) and manage major contracts, undertaking the role of Technical Officer, Responsible Officer and Engineers Representative with limited input from line manager.


Technical Expertise

You will be responsible for managing and providing advice and direction, both within discipline and inter disciplinary, to personnel and contract staff to develop innovative solutions to problems.


Plant Area Responsibility

You will be responsible for the management of the life assessment, risk management and integrity of the plant and equipment within the specific discipline in order to deliver the requirements of the business plan and evaluate and maintain 25 year plant investment plan for 2,360MVA of plant.


Plant Performance

You will manage the investigation, diagnosis and resolve causes of plant level problems jointly with production/operations. Manage ongoing monitoring of plant and equipment performance.



You will formulate, develop, implement and review an asset management and maintenance strategy that meets the requirements of the business plan and 25-year plant investment plan to mitigate risk.




  • engineering Degree/Chartered Status or equivalent qualifications/experience
  • extensive experience within EC&I function in the power industry
  • exceptional leadership skills, a strong communicator with ability to influence at all levels
  • experience of managing complex contracts including planning, directing, organising, leading and managing teams, contractor and consultant resources
  • demonstrable ability to identify, diagnose and provide innovative solutions to complex technical problems
  • detailed knowledge of relevant health, safety and legislation
  • ability and willingness to challenge established working procedures
  • NEBOSH General Certificate
