The Japan Power Trader is a key role within Engie Energy Marketing Japan (EEMJ) and will help determine the success of the newly created business. The role is accountable for delivering book P&L performance, driving trading activity across Japan power markets, and contributing to EEMJ’s growth and profitability over the short, medium and long term.
Job Responsibilities:
• Trading Japan power and accountability for book P&L performance: trade and hedge Japan power products across short-term physical power, JEPX spot auction, intraday markets and forward markets, depending on business needs and desk allocation.
• Short-term trading: maximise value from solar balancing, VPPA and other portfolio positions; ensure new business structures such as PPAs and balancing services are implemented smoothly and profitably; troubleshoot issues in physical power trading and delivery; and lead market analysis for the short-term trading scope.
• Forward curve trading: execute hedging for client flow, evaluate market momentum, actively identify trading opportunities, manage Japan power portfolio risk, and provide market insight to support expansion of Japan power trading activities.
• Business development and structuring: work closely with Japan power originators in Tokyo and energy commodity traders in Singapore to initiate structural ideas, innovate profitable revenue streams, and support the economics and feasibility assessment of new business opportunities.
• Operational collaboration: liaise with internal teams including KYC, Legal, Tax, IT, Middle Office and Back Office on trade lifecycle matters; reconcile P&L reports where required; and contribute to internal and external business presentations.
• Process improvement: take initiative to automate trading processes where appropriate and contribute to efficient, scalable ways of working.
• Flexibility: depending on business needs, the role may require weekend and public holiday work, which will be compensated in accordance with local labour law.
Qualifications:
• Tertiary degree in a relevant discipline such as Engineering, Economics, Finance or Business.
Technical Skills & Experience:
• Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience in Japanese power markets, the energy sector, or energy trading-related roles, with a proven track record of success.
• Solid understanding of Japanese power market structure, JEPX, power plant operations, fuel dynamics and liquidity constraints.
• High-level risk control and risk management skills, with strong market interpretation and decision-making capability under tight deadlines.
• Experience in complex structuring, deal innovation and trading analysis to support commercial decision-making.
• Advanced IT competency, including experience with ETRM systems, and the ability to automate trading processes where required.
• Fluent in both Japanese and English, with the ability to communicate effectively in a business environment and analyse Japanese-language market, regulatory and data sources.
