About the Role
We are seeking an experienced O&M engineer responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of our large scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in the UK. This is an exciting opportunity to get involved early in the project lifecycle with our first two sites currently under construction in Scotland between Glasglow and Edinburgh. The Senior O&M Engineer (BESS) will engage in close coordination between the engineering, project management, and operations teams to ensure smooth commissioning and a seamless transition from construction to full operation. They will also be responsible for setting up and implementing the O&M strategy for these newly built facilities, ensuring operational excellence, safety, and compliance with industry standards.
Key Accountabilities
- Support FlexGen UK in shaping and building a future O&M organization for the existing and future BESS assets.
- Collaborate with the project development and engineering teams during the construction and commissioning phase of new BESS plants.
- Develop the operational and maintenance strategy for new plants, including preventive maintenance schedules, monitoring systems setup, and emergency response protocols.
- Assist in the testing and commissioning processes to ensure the BESS systems meet operational requirements and perform as expected before handover to the O&M team.
- Lead and enforce HSEQ (Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality) compliance, ensuring the plant meets all safety regulations, ISO standards, and environmental guidelines.
- Schedule, coordinate, and supervise site activities performed by third parties, including BESS OEMs.
- Handle tendering and management of maintenance and facility management contracts.
- Implement and oversee an asset management strategy for BESS plants, ensuring all assets are properly tracked, maintained, and managed throughout their lifecycle.
- Use SCADA systems and data analytics to continuously monitor plant performance and troubleshoot technical issues.
- Develop and manage the O&M budget for new and existing BESS plants, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently and that financial goals are met.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with ENGIE experts, central support, contractors, suppliers, and local stakeholders.
- Continuously assess and implement best practices and innovative solutions to enhance plant efficiency, energy production, and overall performance.
Skills/Experience and Qualifications
- Excellent attitude towards safety, familiar with safe systems of work
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, or similar
- Minimum 5 years Operations and Maintenance experience in power asset management
- Proven capability in managing budgets and resources with a focus on cost optimisation and efficiency
- Background in troubleshooting, performance optimisation, and lifecycle management of operating assets
- Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including construction sites and operational BESS plants.
- On-call availability for emergency troubleshooting and resolution.
- Collaborative approach with cross-functional teams and manages vendor relationships to achieve common goals and overcome project challenges.
- Strong leadership qualities, inspiring teams to deliver high performance while managing diverse stakeholders and driving results.
- Self-starting approach, comfortable working alone and across teams
They may also have:
- Experience in commissioning and operational transition of generation assets
- OSHA or other safety certifications (e.g., electrical safety, confined space entry, first aid).
- PMP or similar project management certifications
- Certification in Battery Energy Storage Systems
- Ability to handle complex, unexpected challenges in plant commissioning and operations
