About the Role
The Storengy Stublach Gas Storage Plant is located in the heart of Cheshire and is the largest onshore natural gas storage asset in the UK. We are seeking an experienced Shift Operating Technician with a background in major accident hazard environments (oil, gas, chemicals etc.) to join the operating team.
The Shift Operating Technician will operate the Stublach Gas Storage Plant process equipment, injecting gas into the gas storage cavities and withdrawing gas from storage into the National Transmission System based on the instruction of the commercial team and customer nominations. All equipment is remotely operated from our on-site control room.
Additional responsibilities include
- Undertaking a range of operational duties on high pressure gas handling equipment
- Recording and logging plant operations, activities, overrides and defects
- Conveying safety critical communications in a clear concise manner.
The Shift Operating Technician holds responsibility for the safe operation of the Stublach Gas Storage Plant assets to ensure the protection of personnel and the environment.
Key Accountabilities
- Operate and monitor gas process equipment, ensuring safe and efficient gas injection and withdrawal.
- Operate as the First Response Officer, as detailed in the internal emergency plan, in the event of any site emergency.
- Assist and lead on investigations into gas plant incidents / accidents, commercial shortfalls and operational issues in order to identify root causes and actions to prevent recurrence.
- Start up, shutdown and operate equipment in a safe and compliant manner and in accordance with operating procedures and instructions, providing detailed feedback in order to make improvements.
- Respond to plant alarms to rectify abnormal plant and production situations in a way that minimises the number of process / emergency shutdowns and subsequent gas venting operations.
- Ensures customer nominations are delivered to the defined plan in the most cost effective / energy efficient manner – identifying and accounting for any nomination shortfalls and methods for minimising the impact. Engage effectively with the Commercial Team and Gas Desk in meeting stretched yet achievable nominations.
- Record and log plant operations, activities, and defects.
- Communicate safety-critical information clearly and concisely.
- Conduct root cause analysis for operational faults and provide technical solutions.
- Collaborate with the Maintenance Team to ensure safe and timely maintenance activities.
- Support the Day Operations Team in the delivery of safe systems of work – backfilling / providing cover / additional support as necessary.
- Participate in training and coaching new employees and apprentices.
- Review and update operating procedures based on feedback from audits, incident reports, operational investigations and from those performing the tasks.
Skills and Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in plant operations, preferably in the oil and gas or chemicals industry or similar regulated environments.
- Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations, including COMAH.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to analyze data, identify issues, and implement corrective actions.
- Proficiency in IT skills (Word, Excel, email).
- Ability to work in an isolated environment and respond appropriately in emergencies.
- Full UK driving license.
Qualifications
- BTEC ONC in a technical/engineering subject (BTEC HNC preferred).
- NVQ Level 3 in Control Room Operations, Process Technology, or relevant vocational qualification.
- Safety qualification (e.g., NEBOSH General Certificate, IOSH Managing/Working Safely).
- Demonstration of Process Safety hazard awareness and management training
