Reporting line
The Lead Chemist will report to the Engineering Manager and has delegated responsibility for ensuring that the engineering health and statutory compliance of the power plant assets are appropriately managed and are suitable for the long term needs of the business. The post holder will work closely with the Asset Operations & Maintenance teams to assist in the development and management of suitable systems and engineering policies for the management of asset integrity, associated legislative issues, change control and the delivery of the ECA. Proactive input to the routine and outage planning processes for engineering, maintenance and operational activities by the post holder will be required to achieve the asset integrity objectives with minimum disruption to availability and with efficient use of internal and external resources.
Objective
The Lead Chemist will be responsible for defining the chemistry parameters necessary to achieve the optimum chemical conditions, for operation and to maintain the integrity of the plant over the longer term. In addition, a detailed understanding of the Chemical, Operational and Environmental matters associated with Co-Generation Plant and a wide range of Auxiliary systems is required. Ensure all chemicals; chemical tanks are fully operational always.

Providing professional guidance and advice in relation to power plant chemistry and environmental control.
Job responsibility
• Ability to ensure activities affected by chemical and related considerations carried out effectively, efficiently, economically and safely.
• Ability to support maintenance of sampling analysis.
• Define and maintain the operating and maintenance of parameters necessary to achieve optimum chemical conditions, both for current operation and to maintain the integrity of the
plant over the longer term.
• Providing accurate and timely guidance and advice on any chemical parameters deviation that are affecting plant process, equipment health, performance and water quality to the shift
Engineers, with the confidence to intervene should such action be warranted.
• Defining and implementing operating policies and practices.
• Anticipating and responding effectively to the operational demands on the plants.
• Managing sampling and analysis function and present results appropriately.
• Assist operations departments to manage the chemical store.
• Train and develop operations and maintenance team on best industrial practices related to oil and water chemistry schemes, sampling, testing and analysis.
• Safe and efficient operation of the plant to deliver high levels of commercial availability within environment limits.
• Effective liaison with the Plant Managers / Operation Engineers / Third Party vendors over plant chemistry issues.
• Develop and implement sampling frequency as per plant and equipment condition.
• Deliver outcomes, in all areas of work, consistent with the Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental policies.
• Participate in internal / external Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental audits.
• Be an active participant to the Fleet chemical networking Group (CNG)
• Assist towards ensuring that all procedures, documentation, drawings and manuals kept up to date and necessary training completed in a timely manner.
• Ensure commitment to training programs for both individual development and operational competence and assist towards the development of other staff.
• Communication and cooperation between Operations, Stores and External Vendors.
• Ensure the availability of chemicals always.
• Travelling between Tihama Assets for sample collection, analysis, training and walkdown.
• Knowledge of current chemical handling and safety and best chemical practices
• Knowledge of environmental legislation relevant to power plant operation.
• Computer literacy with MS office / SharePoint / Maximo.
• Knowledge of relevant testing standards and guidelines such as ISO, NAS, ASTM, IEC, EPRI etc.
• Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment usage and calibration.
• Raise the operational performance, reliability and availability of the asset.
• Reduce and optimize the operational cost of chemicals and oils.
• Improve the quality, economy and efficiency of “within-the-fence” projects.
• Contribute Technical Expertise.
• Mobilize, apply and allocate appropriate resources to both normal and exceptional operational circumstances.
• Drive improvement projects to completion.
HSE Responsibilities
• Identify all statutory obligations associated with asset integrity and ensure timely and ongoing compliance with these.
• Develop and implement engineering strategies to ensure that all assets are in a suitable condition for their operational environment to support ongoing achievement of HSE standards.
• Establish and monitor the state of all assets and ensure that all HSE risk items are identified and managed.
• Establish and implement rigorous control processes to ensure all plant changes will not prejudice HSE standards prior to execution.
• Audit compliance of all stakeholders within the Regions with relevant procedures and implement corrective or improvement measures.
• Establish effective and positive relationships with local SA representatives.
• Identify and maintain staff competencies necessary to support team activities.
• Improve Process Safety and be a champion of Operational Excellence.
