3. PREAMBLE

Kathu Operations is a 100 MW greenfield Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) project with parabolic trough technology and equipped with a molten salt storage system that allows 4.5 hours of thermal energy storage and thus limits the intermittent nature of solar energy

4. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

  1. PURPOSE

  • To apply specialist C&I expertise to support the efficient operation and performance of the PV facility.
  • To ensure all plant C&I equipment is operated and maintained according to OEM manuals, warranties, and regulatory requirements.
  • To support real-time plant monitoring and control through SCADA, enabling early fault detection and performance optimisation.
  • To ensure all maintenance activities (preventive, corrective, predictive) are planned and recorded within the CMMS system (Maximo/SAP).
  • To provide accurate C&I performance data to the Performance Engineer for daily, monthly, quarterly, and insurance reporting.
  • To support the DCS/SCADA Engineer in maintaining C&I reliability and ensuring timely completion of work notifications.

  2. MAIN ACTIVITIES

  • Enforce HSE and Quality policies and procedures and ensure that all HSE measures and precautions are strictly considered and taken care of during the execution of maintenance & maintenance activities;
  • Collaborate with other maintenance disciplines, including C&I, to support continuous plant; operation including the CSP Plant;
  • Execute all C&I maintenance activities in compliance with HSE protocols, PTW requirements, LMRAs, and safe operating standards for MV/LV and control equipment;
  • Ensure availability and calibration of specialised C&I test instruments (multimeters, loop calibrators, insulation testers, IR cameras, network testers);
  • Perform scheduled and corrective maintenance on field instrumentation, sensors, inverters, PLCs, RTUs, SCADA interfaces, protection relays, and communication networks.
  • Conduct advanced fault-finding using diagnostic tools, signal tracing, communication protocol checks (Modbus, IEC 61850, TCP/IP), and equipment performance analysis;
  • Attend to all breakdowns, do fault finding/root cause analysis and resolve, fix or replace faulty equipment with minimal energy loss to achieve QA/QC;
  • Monitor plant performance on SCADA, analyse alarms, verify data integrity, and coordinate real-time operational adjustments or dispatch of field technicians;
  • Calibrate instrumentation (irradiance sensors, temperature sensors, power meters, string monitoring devices) and validate measurement accuracy against OEM tolerances;
  • Provide accurate technical data for operational reporting, performance analysis, and insurance/incident investigations;
  • Have the capacity to train/mentor interns or Technical Assistants;
  • Execute electrical day-to-day maintenance activities according to the CMMS(MAXIMO/SAP) notification/work order and properly set by the Electrical Engineer/Maintenance Planner;
  • Assist with maintenance planning, spares forecasting, and scheduling of tasks requiring external resources (cranes, test equipment, contractors);
  • Ensure correct tool application, report missing or damaged equipment, and maintain high standards of tool care and technical readiness;
  • Maintain technical ownership of plant C&I systems and ensure all equipment is kept in optimal operating condition with minimal downtime;
  • Read and interpret electrical, control, and instrumentation drawings, Schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, SCADA layouts, and technical specifications to plan, install, configure, and maintain C&I systems and equipment safely and efficiently;

 

 5. HEALTH & SAFETY

  • The Job Holder will work in a controlled hazardous environment.

 

Work Levels and Conditions and Risks:

  • Work Level 4: the tasks that he/she performs as part of their daily work activities represent a risk of accidents of medium kind that can generate permanent consequences (burns, mutilations, irreversible wounds);

Exposure to Risks:

  • Traffic/automobile accidents, ergonomic problems and accidents;
  • Risks inherent to the job of the PV C&I Technician while performing inspections, site visits, engineering, operations and maintenance activities, etc.

 

Recommended Personal Protective Equipment:

  • The Job Holder is entitled to apply PPE such as hard hat/safety helmet, ear protection (plugs or ear muffs),safety glasses, safety shoes, dust mask, cotton coveralls, safety gloves, respiratory mask. Such PPE will aid in preventing hazards that are inherent to the job.

 6. COMMUNICATION AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The Job Holder will work and communicate with :

Internal: CEO, Head of Departments in Kathu Operations and workforces

  • External: Contractors, Services providers, Energy regulators, KSP and AMEA

7. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential Qualifications:

  • Matric (Gr12);
  • N6/ National Diploma or BTech in Electrical Engineering(Light current: Instrumentation / Process Instrumentation/ Industrial Instrumentation / Mechatronics)
  • Trade test certificate: Trade Test: Instrumentation/Instrument Mechanician
  • Drivers Licence;

Experience:

  • At least 3-5 years’ experience in the in PV plant operations, Electrical maintenance of a large power generation or continuous process plants or industrial;
  • Use of safety systems;
  • Knowledge of applicable electrical codes
  • Power tools understanding and accurate usage
  • Strong Electrical and Instrumentation aptitude, basic understanding of chemistry, physics, electricity and mathematics;
  • Hands-on experience in the maintenance, repair and testing of control and instrumentation equipment;
  • Use of computerized maintenance management system (CMMS);
  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of PV inverters, PLCs, MPPTs, PV Modules and related equipment;
  • Utility scale PV plant construction or operations;
  • Engineering Basics – knowledge of renewable energy power systems, inverters, transformers, and control circuits to ensure seamless integration with grid infrastructure;
  • MV switching (Authorized person);
  • Utility scale PV plant construction or operations;
  • Ability to perform First Aid and CPR.
  • Must have a high degree of skill in Business Computing Applications such as Databases, Word processors, Spreadsheets, PowerPoint and Maximo, other EPS such as (Oracle or SAP) or equivalent

Language:

  • English Language: Excellent communication skills both written and verbal in English;
