ESA Technical Engineering Graduate

Job Description

 1. Job Purpose

  • The Graduate Energy Analyst/Engineer will support ENGIE South Africa’s Renewable Generation Business Unit through technical modelling, engineering analysis, and optimisation of renewable and hybrid energy projects.
  • The role will provide exposure across the full project lifecycle, including origination, pre-development, development, financial close, construction, operations, and asset management.
  • The graduate will work closely with internal technical, development, grid, procurement, finance, project execution, operations, and asset management teams, as well as external consultants, OEMs, contractors, and partners.
  • The role will focus on solar PV, wind, battery energy storage systems, hybrid plant optimisation, dispatch strategies, curtailment, grid export, project performance, and related technical documentation.
  • The programme will include local and international learning, training, and knowledge-sharing opportunities within ENGIE Group.

2. Duties and Responsibilities

What you will do:

  • Support the screening of renewable and hybrid project opportunities, including site, grid, resource, market, and commercial inputs.
  • Assist with preliminary PV, wind, BESS, inverter, transformer, grid export, and hybrid configuration sizing during feasibility, development, and tender stages.
  • Prepare early yield, dispatch, curtailment, clipping, energy shifting, revenue sensitivity, LCOE, LCOS, capacity factor, equivalent cycle, round-trip efficiency, degradation, and availability assessments.
  • Develop and maintain Excel- and Python-based models for hybrid sizing, BESS dispatch, state of charge, grid export, curtailment, and performance analysis.
  • Support engineering inputs for layouts, single-line diagrams, BESS configurations, AC/DC coupling assumptions, metering points, grid connection limits, and project performance assumptions.
  • Review consultant, OEM, EPC, BOP, O&M, Owner’s Engineer, Independent Engineer, LTA, and LTSA inputs, and summarise key modelling assumptions, technical risks, recommendations, and mitigation actions.
  • Draft, contribute to, and support negotiations on owner specifications, technical schedules, tender returnables, and technical inputs to EPC, PPA, FSA, OMA, LTSA, Owner’s Engineer, Independent Engineer, and related agreements.
  • Support bid models, lender due diligence, investment decision materials, and financial close readiness for renewable and hybrid PV+BESS projects.
  • Assist with the technical evaluation of performance guarantees, dispatch assumptions, degradation, availability, grid export, curtailment, statutory, safety, and quality requirements.
  • Support the review of construction-stage drawings, design updates, single-line diagrams, equipment data sheets, contractor submissions, design changes, commissioning milestones, and performance testing inputs.
  • Assist with tracking grid connection actions, BESS integration risks, handover requirements, and verification of modelling assumptions against final design, commissioning data, and operational performance.
  • Support operations and asset management analysis, including PV/wind generation, BESS charge and discharge, state of charge, curtailment, clipping, degradation, cycling, outages, warranty issues, optimisation opportunities, and model-versus-actual reviews.
  • Prepare concise technical summaries, structured engineering documentation, version-controlled working files, risk inputs, project handover materials, and ad hoc advisory support for operational assets and construction projects.
  • Conduct technology watch activities, incorporate ENGIE Group experience and standards, and share knowledge within the Technical Oversight and Support team.

3. Qualifications, Skills and Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • Graduate or early-career candidate with a strong interest in renewable energy technologies, including solar PV, wind, BESS, hybrid systems, grid integration, energy modelling, optimisation, and data analytics.
  • Strong Excel capability is required; interest or exposure to Python, MATLAB, Power BI, HOMER, PLEXOS, PVsyst, PVDesign, or similar modelling and analytics tools would be advantageous.
  • Basic understanding of PV generation, BESS dispatch, state of charge, grid export limits, curtailment, degradation, availability, and performance metrics.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, communication, teamwork, and learning agility skills.
  • As part of the selection process, candidates may be required to complete a case study, technical assessment, or modelling exercise.
  • Willingness to commit to a two-year graduate development programme and travel to project sites where required; a valid driver’s licence would be advantageous.
