Purpose

The CSO is a strategic partner to country management, responsible for embedding sustainability into core operations for better business, better influence and better together.

The CSO is responsible for leading the company on effective management of ESG risks and impacts, including demonstrating leadership in responsible community investment and sustainable company performance. An important part of this is integrating ESG considerations into Engie South Africa’s management philosophy and approach such that all decisions are informed by these considerations. This involves leading the design and development of the Company’s ESG policies and ED Strategy, providing strategic oversight and direction to the team and ensuring ongoing implementation of the company’s Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS).

 

3. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Better Business

Strategic ESG Leadership

  • Act as the primary ESG contact for Global Business Units (GBUs) and Corporate ESG teams.
  • Consolidate ESG performance and objectives at country level (excluding CO₂ trajectories).
  • Ensure strategic dialog with country management and GBU’s on ESG priorities.
  • Coordinate with other functions (HR, Procurement, Ethics, H&S, Finance) to align ESG strategy and execution.

 

 

 

Implementation of ESG Strategies

  • Climate: Support GBUs and Corporate in delivering 2030 Net Zero targets through country implementation actions (where applicable).
  • Nature: Coordinate local implementation of nature-related policies and action plans.
  • Societal: Lead stakeholder dialogue, promote just transition ambitions, and monitor impacts on affected communities throughout project development and operations.
  • Ensure coherence and synergies across environmental and societal action plans, including adaptation strategies with other business processes and governance structures that promote efficiency
  • Ensure biodiversity and nature-based solutions are integrated into business planning, asset management, and infrastructure design.
  • Promote circular economy and resource efficiency practices across projects and operations.
  • Ensure Enterprise Development and Supplier Development programmes are established, with appropriate mechanisms and tools in place to enable effective governance and oversight.
  • Ensure community projects are appropriately identified and aligned with required standards and investment criteria. Robust monitoring and governance frameworks should be implemented to assess and track project impacts.              

 

ESG in Projects and Investment Decisions

  • Participate in sub-GBU development and investment committees to integrate ESG risks and opportunities.
  • Challenge and validate ESG checklists. and ensure final approval on all investment decisions
  • Provide technical expertise on ESG assessments using the required Groups accessible tools and templates.
  • Ensure environmental studies comply with local and required international regulations.
  • Collaborate with project teams to embed ESG in design and execution.
  • Support stakeholder engagement and address environmental concerns.
  • Ensure that potential risks and impacts are identified early during project development, allowing appropriate action plans to be defined and addressed proactively in the initial project phases.
  • Monitor project ESG performance through KPIs and post-construction audits, ensuring lessons learned are integrated into future developments.
  • Provides strategic oversight and direction, overseeing the team in ensuring that ESG matters are integrated into projects’ acquisitions, due diligence, related disclosures, target setting, budgeting, bidding, closing, construction and operations.
  • Managing, monitoring and ensuring compliance, competitiveness and sustainability with respect to Economic Development criteria and commitments.

 

 

ESG Reporting and Data Governance

  • Support local data focal points (Environmental Officers, HSE Officers, and others) in effectively implementing Group policies and fulfilling required reporting processes.
  • Support key functional lines (e.g. Finance teams) in data integration, validation and aligned to Groups reporting process.
  • Ensure high-quality environmental adoption aligned with CSRD and other frameworks. - Contribute to duty of vigilance plan implementation.

 

 

Better Influence

Public Engagement

  • Positions ENGIE’s strategy and sustainability leadership amongst key external stakeholders that promote business and ENGIE’s purpose.
  • Represent ENGIE in national sustainability platforms, public–private initiatives, and industry associations to strengthen the company’s influence on policy and regulatory evolution.

Capacity Building and Network Animation

  • Engage and create awareness on ESG with Key functional stakeholders.
  • Animate network of Local Environmental and Societal Officers.
  • Organize regulatory watch and ensure compliance.
  • Promote ESG programs towards employees and social impacts at country level.

Strategic Influence and Value Creation

  • Act as a strategic advisor to Country Manager, Business developers, and GBU’s on ESG topics.
  • Influence decisions by demonstrating ESG value creation (risk mitigation, cost efficiency, access to capital, reputation).
  • Elevate ESG from compliance to innovation and competitive advantage.

Better Together

  • Provide leadership, guidance and management of the team, including team meetings, objectives, performance assessments and reviews.
  • Design and guide organizational linkages between the ESG department and other departments such that cross-department roles and responsibilities are defined, and lines of reporting are clear.
  • Organisational structure and team management to support Engie ways of working and ways of leading.
  • Unite employees through local initiatives that connect people with nature and their communities, fostering engagement and shared purpose.
  • Empower the workforce to actively contribute to the company’s net-zero ambitions, ensuring that sustainability becomes part of everyday actions.
  • Enhance strategic alignment by bridging corporate objectives with local realities, creating coherence between global goals and on-the-ground execution.
  • Prepare annual budget estimates for the team and ongoing budget management.
  • Determine and ensure effective resource requirements for the corporate and project teams to enable effective risk and impact management.

5. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Education

  • Bachelor’s / postgraduate degree (in socio-economic and/ or environmental science and/or sustainability/ development studies)
  • Additional relevant qualifications would be advantageous.
  • Professional registrations and associations would be advantageous.

 

Language

  • Fluent in English (verbal, written and presentation skills)
  • Ability to speak in forums or public platforms.
  • Additional South African languages could be advantageous.

 

Core Experience & Skills

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience in areas of ESG, including implementation and project management specific experience in the construction and operation of large-scale greenfield projects.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the assessment and/or application of best practice ESG standards and performance
  • Proven experience in providing advice and input into strategic orientation and decision making on ESG at senior management level.
  • Very strong understanding of the South African market, socio-economic landscape and regional nuances.
  • Specific experience in the power generation sector would be advantageous, specifically able to demonstrate experience and expertise in:
    • ESG Risk Management and Corporate Reporting
    • SED Project Strategy Design and Execution
    • People Management and Stakeholder Engagement

 

Advantageous Experience & Skills

  • Experience across multiple power generation technologies.
  • Experience across multiple project phases (development, construction, commissioning, operations. decommissioning) including REIPPP or Corporate PPA Bid and FC experience.
  • Experience with various project types and structures (greenfield, brownfield, acquisitions, divestments, project finance, equity finance, government and corporate PPAs).
  • Knowledge of energy market players (Suppliers, Contractors, Consultants, Competitors) and industry practice would be advantageous.
  • Experience in corporate sustainability reporting systems, tools and presentations
