What You Can Expect

As a Water Plant Operator Trainee at The University of Iowa campus, you will learn to operate all plant machinery and treatment processes necessary to safely produce drinking water for our customers across the campus.

 

Each day begins with a meeting or handoff between shifts to discuss current plant conditions and tasks to be completed. You and your supervising licensed Grade IV  Water  Plant Operator will start with rounds, conducting required tests across the plant, checking pH and chlorine levels, and monitoring water flows. You'll also conduct walkthroughs, backwash filters, inspect chemical pumps, ensure completion of shift-specific tasks, interpret test results, make chemical adjustments, and handle industrial hygiene or housekeeping duties such as cleaning the lime slaker. Additionally, you'll adjust machinery and chemicals to match flow changes, monitor alarms and equipment status changes, perform minor repairs when necessary, and notify management or maintenance as needed. Ensuring that logs are up-to-date and communicating any changes in operating status to the oncoming shift are also key responsibilities.

 

The ultimate goal of the trainee role is to prepare employees and help them gain experience to become Level II Water Treatment Operators, which requires two years of experience or a combination of experience and higher education.

 

The facility operates 24/7, and shifts rotate regularly (every 2 months). You must be available to work holidays, weekends, and nights as required.

 

 

What You’ll Bring

  • A minimum education level of a High School Diploma or GED is required
  • Candidate must have experience or be willing to learn basic applied chemistry and mathematics for calculating flows, and for safely measuring and applying treatment chemicals
  • Trainees must obtain a valid Grade II Water Treatment Plant Operator license within 2 years of employment
  • Advanced levels of education will reduce the required experience necessary for licensure eligibility according to Iowa Department of Natural Resources regulations

 

 

Additional Details

  • Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies
  • Must possess a valid U.S. Driver’s License and a clean driving record as this position requires the use of company vehicles
  • Daily attendance at the worksite is required
  • The position consists of 95% indoor work and 5% outdoor work, with outdoor work potentially exposing employees to weather conditions
  • Could involve lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires the ability to be fit tested for respirators

 

 

Compensation

Salary Range:  $20.34 – $29.80 USD/ hourly

 

This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.

Actual offered salary may depend on geography, experience, industry knowledge, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors.

In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for a competitive bonus / incentive plan.
