As an Electrical & Instrumentation Technician II supporting the University of Iowa campus, you’ll work across a campus-wide utility system, supporting steam, chilled water, and power operations. This role offers a unique opportunity to build hands-on expertise across meters, controls, PLCs, and distribution systems — all in one environment.
No two days look the same. You’ll troubleshoot complex systems, support critical infrastructure, and expand your technical skillset in a team that puts safety first.
What You’ll Do
- Maintain and install electrical, instrumentation, and control systems across campus utility plants and distribution networks
- Support and troubleshoot steam metering systems and controls infrastructure
- Work with PLCs — including troubleshooting, configuration, and implementation (hardware, software, and firmware)
- Read and interpret schematics, diagrams, and utility system drawings
- Support industrial networking and metering communications systems, including switch configuration
- Perform a mix of planned upgrades, system improvements, and real-time troubleshooting
- Identify root causes of system issues and recommend improvements
- Participate in an on-call rotation (1-hour onsite response required)
What You’ll Bring
- This role requires a minimum educational level of a High School Diploma or GED, plus four (4) years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of technical training and education (military, associate degree, or certification in electrical or electronics)
- Experience working with utility systems in industrial or power plant environments, including hands-on exposure to industrial networking (e.g., MS Server and switch configuration)
- Hands-on experience troubleshooting and repairing electrical instrumentation, and control systems using diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters)
- Experience with PLCs and control systems, including basic programming, instrumentation calibration, and system installation/configuration
- Familiarity with industrial networking environments (e.g., MS Server, Ethernet networks, switches) within an operational or plant setting
- Working knowledge of electrical codes, safety standards, and manufacturer guidelines, along with strong problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills
Additional Details
- You must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license/clean driving record to drive company vehicles while on campus
- You must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies
- This role requires daily attendance at worksite
- Must be physically capable to hear and understand audible alarms, detect changes in noise levels of equipment and portable radio communication
- Capable of frequently standing; walking; balancing; sitting; climbing (ladders, stairs, ramps, catwalks and the like as required); kneeling; pushing; pulling; lifting (min. 50 lbs)
- Capable of performing repetitive motions as required
- Required to have eyesight corrected at 20/40 to accurately read and interpret such as but not limited to instruments, gauges, and manuals
- Must be physically capable of wearing protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to half and full-face respirators, fall protection equipment, hardhat, safety shoes, safety glasses
- The position consists of 85% work indoors and 15% work outdoors; outdoor work may expose the employee to weather conditions
Compensation
Hourly Range: $33.41 - $51.20 USD hourly
This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.
ENGIE complies with all federal, state, and local minimum wage laws. Actual salary offered may vary depending on geography, experience, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors.
In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for a competitive bonus / incentive plan.
