What You Can Expect

As our Construction Management Senior at The University of Iowa you will have the critical leadership role of managing safe, efficient, and high-quality construction projects across the University of Iowa Campus. These projects advance the University’s energy and utility infrastructure and are located on the Main and Oakdale campuses, including the University Hospital.

This position supports a 50-year concession agreement to operate, maintain and enhance the University of Iowa’s utility system. The projects you’ll take on will involve numerous and diverse projects in the areas of electric and thermal energy production and distribution, and storm and wastewater infrastructure. No two days will be the same.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead pre-construction safety planning by developing HSE plans, conducting site hazard assessments, and managing traffic control, site access, and security credentialing
  • Maintain a strong safety presence in the field through daily job walks, active engagement with contractors and internal teams, and reinforcement of ENGIE’s Stop Work Authority and zero-incident culture
  • Prepare and implement comprehensive HSEQ plans for all capital improvement and efficiency projects, ensuring alignment with regulatory and ENGIE standards
  • Coordinate with GIS analysts and utility locators to identify buried utilities and confined spaces, integrating findings into job safety plans before ground-breaking
  • Monitor construction activities for compliance with safety protocols, engineering standards, and code requirements; proactively resolve issues while providing field input to track schedule and budget performance
  • Support project development and execution by assisting with bidder site visits, RFIs, cost estimation, and scheduling; review contractor plans for constructability, operator access, and long-term maintenance safety considerations
  • Partner with project engineers and managers to develop specifications and construction documents embedding safety, quality, and compliance; provide technical/commercial oversight including review of change requests, directives, and contractor payment applications
  • Oversee QA/QC and commissioning processes, ensuring all work meets specifications, passes inspections, and is left in a safe, operable condition

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Engineering, or a related technical field (ABET-accredited preferred) OR a high school diploma/GED and with at least five (5) additional years of equivalent experience in construction management or engineering in lieu of degree
  • Minimum five (5) years of construction management experience on industrial or municipal projects, with proven success in safety, quality, and schedule performance
  • Deep knowledge of thermal plant design, construction, and operations, plus strong understanding of campus or district energy systems and delivery methods such as Design-Build and CMAR
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety leadership, fostering a culture that prioritizes zero incidents and protects employees, contractors, and the public
  • Effective interpersonal and leadership skills, including ability to build trust, resolve conflicts, and facilitate meetings to achieve performance goals
  • Experience in project controls and oversight, including RFQ/RFP evaluations, subcontractor management, contract administration, change management, and constructability reviews
  • Proficiency in technical communication and reporting, using tools like Microsoft Office and Procore to prepare presentations, reports, and stakeholder updates; skilled in problem-solving and root cause analysis

Additional Details

  • This role requires daily presence on active construction sites and is not eligible for hybrid in-office work schedule
  • Some night or weekend work is possible based on project schedules and call outs due to outages
  • Must comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies and maintain OSHA certifications (OSHA 10 within 30 days; OSHA 30 within one year)
  • Valid state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record required; role involves safe operation of company vehicles
  • Work is approximately 50% indoors and 50% outdoors, with exposure to varying weather conditions and temperatures
