Manager/Sr. Manager - HVDC

Role Overview

The Manager / Senior Manager – HVDC will be responsible for performing feasibility studies, FEED (Front End Engineering Design), detailed design reviews, and technical oversight of EHV AC and HVDC transmission projects, with a focus on HVDC converter stations (±320 kV and above). The role involves involvement across project lifecycle stages including design review, engineering coordination, develop FEED document etc. Deep understanding of converter station components, control software architectures, and grid-forming is desired.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Design

• Lead and/or review HVDC station engineering including converter transformers, valves, reactors, filters, DC switchyards, AC yards, protection & control, SCADA, and auxiliary systems.
• Perform technical reviews of basic and detailed engineering documents for EHV AC (345 kV and above) and HVDC projects (±320 kV and above).
• Interface with OEMs, EPC contractors, and design consultants for HVDC systems and equipment.
• Ensure compliance with international standards (IEC, IEEE, CIGRÉ) and utility-specific technical requirements.

Technical Support During Commissioning

• Provide technical support during commissioning of HVDC converter stations, including pre-commissioning checks, energization, trial operations, and performance testing.
• Support troubleshooting of HVDC system issues during commissioning and early operations.
• Review commissioning procedures, test reports, and punch list closures.

Technical Support During Operation & Maintenance (O&M)

• Provide technical Support during O&M activities for HVDC stations, including reliability assessments, root cause analysis, and performance improvement initiatives.
• Develop or review O&M manuals, maintenance philosophies, and long-term asset management strategies.

 Project Management & Coordination

• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (civil, protection, SCADA, control, mechanical) to ensure timely project delivery.
• Support project planning, technical risk assessment, and interface management.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance across projects.

Client & Stakeholder Interaction

• Act as a key technical interface with clients, utilities, OEMs, and regulatory authorities.
• Support technical proposals, bids, and feasibility studies related to HVDC and EHV transmission projects.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

• Graduate Degree in Electrical Engineering (mandatory).
• Postgraduate qualification will be an added advantage.

Experience

• Minimum 6+ years of experience in EHV AC transmission (345 kV and above) and/or HVDC projects (±320 kV and above).
• At least 2 years of hands-on experience in Engineering / Commissioning / O&M of HVDC converter stations.
• Experience with LCC and/or VSC-based HVDC systems is preferred.
• Exposure to international or large utility-scale power transmission projects is highly desirable.

Technical Skills

• Strong understanding of:

• HVDC system configurations and operational principles
• Converter transformers, valves, DC equipment, filters, and reactive power compensation
• Protection & control philosophies for HVDC systems
• Grid code compliance and system integration
• Familiarity with engineering tools, studies, and technical documentation workflows.
• Knowledge of relevant IEC/IEEE standards and best practices.
