Job Title: Technical Expert : Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

Role Overview:
The Technical Expert : Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is a senior specialist role responsible for in-depth diagnostics, testing, performance evaluation, and reliability enhancement of utility-scale stand-alone BESS and hybrid (Solar + BESS / Wind + BESS) systems. The role requires 8-10 years of hands-on BESS project analysis, strong expertise in battery technology, power conversion systems, controls, and advanced capabilities in battery testing, degradation assessment, safety engineering, and system-level analysis.
Key Responsibilities:
- BESS Diagnostics, Repair & Maintenance:
- Lead hands-on fault diagnostics at cell, module, rack, PCS, EMS/PMS, and system levels.
- Perform inspection and repair for battery modules, sensors, racks, contactors, and battery protection systems.
- Conduct thermal imaging, impedance spectroscopy, load testing, and post-repair verification.
- System-Level Analysis – Stand-Alone & Hybrid BESS:
- Evaluate power dispatch performance, grid interaction, and transient response for stand-alone BESS.
- Analyze hybrid interactions involving inverters, PCS, MPPT, and grid controllers for renewable smoothing and firming.
- Assess renewable variability impact on battery degradation.
- Battery Technology Expertise & Testing:
- Provide deep technical expertise on Li-ion chemistries: LFP, NMC, NCA, LTO.
- Conduct cell/module cycle testing, capacity testing, stress testing, and degradation profiling.
- Review OEM test reports, UL9540A data, and IEC conformity.
- BMS & Controls:
- Diagnose BMS firmware and SOC/SOH algorithms.
- Analyze balancing performance, sensor biases, and derating logic.
- Evaluate PCS control loops and EMS algorithms for scheduling and charge control.
- Root Cause Analysis & OEM Engagement:
- Lead RCAs for thermal events, imbalance, degradation, and PCS failures.
- Prepare detailed RCA reports and corrective/preventive recommendations.
- Coordinate with OEM engineering for design corrections and firmware updates.
- Warranty, LTSA & Insurance Support:
- Validate warranty claims using cycle count, SOH data, and event logs.
- Provide technical evidence for insurance claims.
- Assess refurbishment vs repowering strategies for aging assets.
- Spare Parts Strategy & Procurement Support:
- Define critical spare parts strategies for modules, CMUs, relays, sensors, and PCS components.
- Evaluate supplier quality and warranty reliability.
- Site-Level Technical Support:
- Support site teams during breakdowns, anomalies, and safety events.
- Guide commissioning, upgrades, and critical maintenance.
- Analyze event logs, SCADA, EMS/PMS data, and grid parameters.
- Monitoring Platforms & Diagnostic Tools:
- Use EMS/PMS/SCADA for predictive diagnostics.
- Detect early degradation signs and recommend life-extension strategies.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Work with engineering, digital, and asset management to drive reliability.
- Share insights for design improvements and procurement decisions.
- Process Standardization & Compliance:
- Develop SOPs for diagnostics, safety protocols, and reporting.
- Ensure compliance with IEEE, IEC, and UL standards.
- Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or Energy Storage.
- Minimum 8-10 years of hands-on BESS experience.
- Expertise in battery technology, PCS, BMS, EMS/PMS, and degradation analysis.
