The Environmental Advisor will manage environmental permitting, licensing, due diligence, and compliance activities for renewable energy projects, with a primary focus on ENGIE’s California portfolio. This individual will support wind, solar, and battery storage projects from the early development stages through construction and operations. Will be responsible for helping projects secure required permits and approvals in a timely manner, identifying environmental risks, coordinating consultants and contractors, and supporting ongoing compliance with applicable environmental requirements.
- Manage and coordinate environmental permitting, licensing, and compliance requirements for wind, solar, and battery storage projects.
- Lead environmental due diligence and fatal-flaw reviews for prospective development sites and acquisition opportunities.
- Support California-specific environmental permitting and regulatory activities required for renewable energy development projects.
- Monitor project schedules and help ensure environmental permits and approvals are secured in a timely manner.
- Oversee environmental budgets associated with due diligence, permitting, environmental assessments, consultation activities, and compliance.
- Ensure compliance with applicable environmental permits and regulatory requirements during construction and operational phases.
- Scope, contract, and manage environmental consultants and contractors providing permitting, regulatory, and technical services.
- Conduct environmental risk assessments for potential development sites and acquisition opportunities.
- Advise management regarding environmental regulatory developments or changes that may affect renewable energy projects and operating facilities.
- Develop and maintain environmental procedures that promote consistency across construction and operational projects.
- Support environmental management plans, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan compliance, Migratory Bird Treaty Act and Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act compliance, unanticipated discovery plans, permit matrices, and vegetation management plans.
- Assist with the development and improvement of company environmental tools, including the Environmental Management System and due-diligence or fatal-flaw review templates.
- Maintain organized and current records of environmental approvals, regulatory submissions, audit reports, permits, and environmental compliance information.
- Assist with environmental audits of renewable facilities and provide training on applicable environmental legislation, requirements, and practices.
- Support environmental reporting documentation as requested.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, or a related field required.
- Master’s degree or an applicable professional license preferred.
- Minimum of seven years of operational and managerial experience in environmental compliance, permitting, and business development within the energy sector.
- Demonstrated experience supporting environmental permitting and compliance for renewable energy or other energy-sector projects.
- Knowledge of environmental due diligence, fatal-flaw analysis, environmental assessments, permitting, and regulatory authorizations.
- Experience navigating federal, state, and local environmental legislation, regulations, policies, and permitting requirements.
- Subject-matter expertise in areas such as:
- Air emissions
- Discharge permitting
- Solid, hazardous, and non-hazardous waste management
- Stormwater pollution prevention
- Oil-spill prevention
- Wetlands and wildlife protection
- Bird and bat survey and monitoring programs
- Environmental emergency response and remediation
- Knowledge of federal environmental and wildlife requirements, including the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
- Experience applying root-cause analysis tools to environmental noncompliance events.
- Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, presentation, and stakeholder-management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments accurately and within established deadlines.
- Proficiency with database management, modeling, and analysis in support of environmental activities.
