3. JOB PURPOSE

Kathu Operations is a 100 MW greenfield Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) project with parabolic trough technology and equipped with a molten salt storage system that allows 4.5 hours of thermal energy storage and thus limits the intermittent nature of solar energy

4. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

 

  1. PURPOSE
  • DCIS Engineers design and develop new control systems and instrumentation, often working with other engineers to integrate these systems into larger processes;  They are involved in the installation and commissioning of these systems, ensuring they are properly integrated into the plant or facility;
  • Maintain and troubleshoot existing control systems, identifying and resolving issues that may arise; They continuously look for ways to optimize processes and systems, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce downtime;
  • Continuously look for ways to optimize processes and systems, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce downtime, They are responsible for programming and configuring the DCS, including setting up control loops, alarms, and user interfaces.
  • Collaborate with various teams, including Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering, to ensure the successful implementation and operation of the DCS. They also provide technical support to customers and other stakeholders;.

 

       2. MAIN ACTIVITIES

  • Participate in improvement decisions, CAPEX justifications, and progress meetings;
  • Manage IT & Instrumentation data, support budgeting, cost control, and root cause analysis;
  • Maintain and troubleshoot SCADA/DCS systems, ensure backups and reliable IT/communication systems;
  • Train, supervise, and manage performance of team members and technicians;
  • Diagnose and resolve issues in DCS, instrumentation, networks, and field equipment;
  • Conduct system evaluations and implement improvements for efficiency and reliability;
  • Design and implement control systems; collaborate with engineering teams on projects;
  • Manage control & instrumentation projects and mentor junior staff;
  • Assist with maintenance budgeting, cost estimates, purchase orders, and contracts;
  • Monitor maintenance costs and progress; report findings to management;
  • Develop and improve maintenance plans, procedures, and spare parts inventory;
  • Participate in plant shutdowns, manage contractors, and oversee maintenance personnel;
  • Conduct site inspections to ensure quality work and proper execution;
  • Coordinate daily maintenance, troubleshooting, and emergency repairs;
  • Work with planners to ensure materials and resources are available;
  • Ensure maintenance activities are completed on time and recorded accurately (e.g., Maximo);
  • Support plant performance improvement and cost reduction initiatives;
  • Minimise equipment downtime and maximise plant availability;
  • Ensure compliance with calibration, testing, and maintenance standards;
  • Analyse operational trends and implement corrective actions for continuous improvement;
  • Monitor maintenance costs and ensure alignment with budgets;
  • Ensure compliance with operational technology and cybersecurity standards;
  • Enforce proper SCADA data management, system modifications, and calibration controls;
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management;
  • Enforce HSE and quality standards to prevent incidents and ensure safe operations;

 

5. HEALTH & SAFETY

  • The Job Holder will work in a controlled hazardous environment.

Work Levels and Conditions and Risks:

  • Work Level 4: the tasks that he/she performs as part of their daily work activities represent a risk of  accidents of medium kind that can generate permanent consequences (burns, mutilations, irreversible wounds).

Exposure to Risks:

  • Traffic/automobile accidents, ergonomic problems and accidents;
  • Risks inherent to the job of the DCIS Engineer while performing inspections, site visits, engineering, operations and maintenance activities, etc.

Recommended Personal Protective Equipment:

  • The Job Holder is entitled to apply PPE such as hard hat/safety helmet, ear protection (plugs or ear muffs),safety glasses, safety shoes, dust mask, cotton coveralls, safety gloves, respiratory mask. Such PPE will aid in preventing hazards that are inherent to the job.

 

6. COMMUNICATION AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The Job Holder will work and communicate with :

  • Internal: CEO, Head of Departments in Kathu Operations and workforces

External: Contractors, Services providers, Energy regulators, KSP and AMEA

7. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential Qualifications:

  • BEng, BSC or Btech in Electrical Engineering (Instrumentation & Control, Process Control, Automation & Electronic Engineering) ;
  • Postgraduate qualification in management/Leadership;
  • GCC Certificate(Factories or Mines) (Electrical) will be Advantageous
  • Registration with ECSA will be advantageous;
  • Driver’s License

Experience:

  • 3 - 5 years of experience in the in a Power Plant, Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, mineral processing or in the Chemical Industry;
  • Experience in leading and managing people;
  • Proficiency in electrical design software;
  • Deep knowledge of electrical processes and understanding of electrical engineering codes and safety standards.
