Context

Market Analysis (MA) is a center of expertise within Energy Management at S&EM, with the mission of supporting Engie in achieving a successful energy transition through advanced knowledge.
Market Analysis provides a wide range of services related to energy markets, including price forecasting, supply and demand analysis, meteorological and climate assessments, asset valuation, strategic studies, regulation and market design, and, of course, environmental economics.
Its expertise covers electricity and all types of gas, both short- and long-term, across Engie’s key markets. The objective is to develop cutting-edge methodologies to anticipate the challenges of the energy transition.

Environmental Economics (EE) is a team within the Market Analysis Expertise Center. It consists of five analysts based in Paris and Brussels.
Its activities are structured around three fundamental pillars:

  1. Carbon emissions management: establishing carbon balances and trajectories, and providing targeted support on carbon-related topics such as biogenic CO₂ or CDR (carbon dioxide removal), i.e., the capture and sequestration of atmospheric CO₂ through human intervention.
  2. Green energy: assessing the impact of regulation on green energy projects, building price scenarios, and supporting market analysis of voluntary green energy certification systems.
  3. Environment: expertise, reporting, and benchmarking on ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) topics not directly related to energy, such as climate change, pollution, water, waste, land use, and biodiversity.

Your Mission

The intern will be an integral part of the Environmental Economics team. He or she may be involved in the various studies underway at the time of the internship, depending on his or her availability and skills. Therefore, the mission described below should be understood simply as a guiding thread for the internship.

The theme of decarbonization at the Engie Group, in connection with the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) dimension, is proposed for this internship:

A) Net Zero Ambitions

The Engie Group has set the ambition of becoming Net Zero Carbon by 2045 across its three emission scopes (covering both the Group’s direct emissions and the indirect effects of its activities). A SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative) dossier has been submitted, presenting intermediate objectives for 2030 that comply with scientific standards, thereby certifying the Group’s approach.

The intern may, for example, carry out the following tasks:

  1. Study the evolution of SBTi and GHG Protocol standards.
  2. Develop emission reduction trajectories for the Engie Group, consolidating historical emission estimates and projections collected from the Group’s various entities (e.g., the carbon trajectory of a BU or GBU, or the Ways of Working process managed at the Corporate level).
  3. Contribute to the development of a tool for assessing the carbon footprint of an investment project.
  4. Support Engie Group entities in meeting their CSRD reporting obligations.
  5. Participate in analyzing the potential for biomethane development in Europe.

B) Adaptation

Beyond efforts to mitigate the Group’s carbon footprint, it is also necessary to prepare Engie for climate change (adaptation). For the past four years, with an expanding scope, operational entities have been reporting their climate risk analyses and action plans to reduce the negative impact on their activities.

Working alongside the internship supervisor, the intern will contribute to supporting Engie Group entities in their obligations of climate risk analysis and reporting under the Adaptation framework.
