Context:

Within GEMS, the mission of the business platform Short-term Power as-a-Service (SPaaS) is to deliver services and value for clients on the short-term power markets through strong business expertise and a digital experience. The Power Asset Optimization (PAO) desk within SPaaS supports a large range of internal and external customers in Central Western Europe (CWE) by providing power asset optimization services on the day-ahead and intraday markets. PAO aims at delivering spot value for the different power plant technologies in the CWE portfolio while respecting the contractual, regulatory and compliance frameworks in order to avoid any penalties.

We are currently looking for a Power Asset Optimizer for Intraday (PAO ID) in Brussels to strengthen our team. The mission of the optimizer consists of a series of operational activities performed in 24/7 shifts that lock the highest possible value for each asset across the intraday markets available to them. If these activities appeal to you and you meet the requirements below, then you are the talent we are looking for. Do not waste time!

Role:

As a Power Asset Optimizer for Intraday, your role will be to take part in the daily (24/7) asset optimization activity, which includes:

  • Carrying out continuous optimization runs for the portfolio of assets in CWE (including nuclear, coal, gas-fired, CHP, biomass and pump storage plants) and exposing accurately the flexibility from the assets to the traders from the Short-term Trading (STT) team for its trading on the continuous intraday markets.
  • Preparing asset bidding strategies for the portfolio on the intraday auctions (taking place every day at 15h00, 22h00 and 10h00), that arbitrate opportunities between these auctions and the continuous, the ancillary activation and imbalance markets (where applicable).
  • Ensuring a thorough understanding of the P&L of every asset, a comprehensive reporting of the intraday activity and a transparent logging of all relevant transactions in the deal capture systems in use.
  • Contributing to the simplification and digitalization (automation) of the activities of the desk, including the development of algorithmic solutions to prepare bidding strategies in the markets concerned.

Qualifications:

Here below is a summary of the qualifications that we’re looking for:

  • Master’s degree in engineering or any other quantitative discipline (economics, computer science, finance, etc.).
  • Willingness to take part in a rotating, on-duty shift system (24/7) requiring work outside standard working hours (i.e. morning, evening and night shifts), during week-ends and bank holidays (with the appropriate compensation).
  • Good understanding of the economics behind power plants, their technologies and how they are exploited in European power markets. Here energy enthusiasts are very welcome: if you have a solid understanding of energy markets and a passion for risk management and asset optimization, we're excited to meet you. Your experience in these areas will be highly regarded.
  • Bring your analytical skills, attention to detail and structured approach to make a meaningful contribution. We will value highly your ability to take the initiative and bring new ideas to the table.
  • A team player with strong communication skills: join a team where your ability to work with colleagues from other teams and different backgrounds comes naturally to you and helps ensure operational excellence and sound project delivery.
  • Coding skills in languages like Python and VBA are a plus, but we're equally interested in your willingness to learn and grow. We offer a supportive environment where you can enhance your skills.
  • Fluency in English, with Dutch and French seen as a particular advantage.

What do we offer:

  • A window to the intraday power markets in all CWE countries.
  • The opportunity to optimize power plant portfolios with predominant positions across Europe, and that include state-of-the-art thermal and pump storage assets.
  • A position to liaise and cooperate with intraday traders, risk officers, forecasters, power dispatchers, middle- and back-office counterparts for a complete portfolio optimization experience.
  • The means to develop coding skills in languages commonly used today.
  • Engagement with a stimulating role that embraces constant evolution. Challenges arise daily, offering opportunities for creative problem-solving and intellectual growth.
  • Flexible work arrangements aimed at facilitating a healthy work/life balance, including allowances to work from home and abroad.
  • The possibility to grow professionally in one of the leading players of the European energy sector.
  • A positive and collaborative work culture, where every voice is valued.
