Context:

In this section, please introduce the team, its position within the organization (GEMS), the purpose and role played by the team within GEMS.

Power IS covers the IS landscape for all Power short term activities within Gems, ie business activities handled from 1 week before delivery to physical delivery. This encompasses the generation of optimal production plans for the physical assets under Gems responsibility, trading on short term markets to sell the energy produced, physical steering of the assets, and communication with Power grid operators (TSOs) and regulators for nomination and transparency processes.

Power IS teams (~100p between Paris and Brussels) are responsible for the maintenance and evolution of the IS systems needed by business to support these activities.

The newly created team Transversal services is aligned to BP Trading power and BP Spaas for their short term activities, and focuses on common technical services connecting to Power grid operators (TSO’s) and Short term power markets (Intraday continuous, Day ahead auctions, Intraday auctions, …).

Role:

The position reports to the head of Power IS and will cover the following activities:

  • build and maintain the technical services (APIs) enabling the asset portfolio’s automatons to send orders to the intraday and day ahead power markets safely, ie respecting the limits framework defined by GEMS Compliance team, and implementing the automatic booking chain to GEMS booking systems (Orchestrade, Meteor) and the reporting of trades to Power grid operators (trade nomination).
  • build and maintain the technical services (APIs) enabling the asset portfolio owners to exchange with Power grid operators in an automated way: production nomination, reserve bidding, reserve activation, and the automatic booking chain to GEMS booking systems (Orchestrade, Meteor) when relevant
  • build and maintain the interfaces for asset portfolio owners to report assets unavailabilities to Power grid operators/ENTSOE and to REMIT

The scope of these services is NWE as a primary focus (BE/FR/NL/GE), with the ambition to extend to Europe in the future (UK, IT, Spain) with local resources.

Main activities and responsibilities:

  • Management of the team (20 to 30 people, permanents and contractors).
  • Define the role and responsibilities within the team.
  • Identification of the key people build succession and backup plans.
  • Coordination and management of the relationship with business teams. Build a trust partnership with business.
  • Propose, organize and deliver the roadmap as defined with business sponsors
  • Budget Management and follow-up, in link with the Management Office
  • Define suitable project organization, communication, functional and technical architecture proposal.
  • Ensure the effectiveness and performance of provided services and applications
  • Liaise with other teams within Gems IS, whenever relevant, either to align to Gems standards, or to participate to their evolutions: Architecture, Digital accelerator, Infrastructure, Security, …
  • Liaise with HR to ensure a continuous follow-up of the internal staff, raise staffing needs and organize the staff plan of the team in the short and long terms.

The development approach is agile and is focused on the value brought to business, in short, medium and long term.

Hard skills:

  • Must have:
    • IS team management
    • Previous experience of IS with internal development, in a multi-user trading environment
    • Application lifecycle management
    • Technical and applicative architecture
    • Interest for power business, and ability to build a strong partnership with business representatives.

Education and professional background:

  • Master’s degree in engineering with a proven specialty in IT or equivalent.
  • Previous experience (Over 5 years) in IS with internal development
  • Previous experience in the management of teams in charge the software development in a trading environment
  • Over 10 years’ experience.

Languages:

  • Fluent English mandatory
  • French or Dutch

Travels:

  • The position is based in Brussels, with regular trips to Paris
  • Punctual trips to various locations in Europe (Italy, UK, Spain, …)
