Context & purpose of the role
As flexibility behind the meter becomes an essential driver in the energy transition, ENGIE is actively expanding its industrial operations to encompass the design, procurement, and installation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). These assets play a pivotal role in delivering flexibility and optimizing energy consumption for our customers. The Supply Energy Management (SEM) and Local Energy Infrastructure (LEI) GBU will take the lead in sales, aggregation, and flexibility management, maintaining close collaboration with engineering and installation partners to ensure project success.
Program Purpose in SEM
Within this context, the Decentralized Flexibility Acceleration Team (Flex Hub) in SEM is building scalable BESS product for B2B customers. The BESS Solution Engineer & Sales Support role is primarily accountable for the technical integrity and Health & Safety (H&S) requirements of behind-the-meter BESS projects, while supporting the Sales teams on pre-sales activities (technical qualification, solution design, technical clarifications and partner alignment). The role is designed for a strong technical expert who is interested in progressively broadening exposure to commercial topics, without being initially responsible for closing deals.
Growth Target
The program is committed to significant expansion, targeting an increase from 800 MW in 2025 to more than 2.5 GW by 2030.
Primary Markets
The principal markets targeted for growth and deployment include the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, with potential expansion into Poland, Italy, and Spain to serve industrial clients.
Program Approach
- Leverage an integrated structure that brings together Sales (B2B, LEI, B2C), Risk Management (SPM), and Trading (EM) functions.
- Combine specialized expertise in dedicated streams to drive local performance and establish global standards.
- Launch innovative solutions in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Solar, and Demand Side Management (DSM).
Your Missions
- Own the technical design of behind-the-meter BESS projects (architecture, technology selection, key interfaces such as EMS/inverter/protection/HVAC/fire safety/civil works, grid connection as applicable).
- Define and maintain technical standards, specifications and best practices for decentralized BESS deployments (templates, checklists, lessons learned).
- Ensure compliance with ENGIE and local H&S requirements across design, installation and commissioning, including contractor H&S management and site readiness.
- Audit partners and installations to verify compliance with ENGIE requirements; define corrective actions and follow-up plans.
- Support Sales in opportunity qualification by providing technical inputs (site constraints, sizing hypotheses, risks, CAPEX/OPEX drivers, schedule and constructability).
- Contribute to tenders/RFPs and customer-facing technical discussions (technical notes, assumptions, clarifications, technical due diligence packages).
- Align with Sales, Risk Management and Trading on technical assumptions impacting value (availability, operating constraints, warranty limits, performance guarantees).
- Coordinate with EPC contractors and technology partners during procurement, installation and commissioning by reviewing key documents (design packages, method statements, H&S plans, FAT/SAT, commissioning procedures) and managing technical deviations.
What we are looking for
- Deep technical knowledge of battery systems (BESS) and associated energy assets, including key constraints (safety, performance, warranty, degradation).
- Solid engineering expertise in industrial projects and EPC contracts; ability to challenge suppliers and contractors on design choices and execution readiness.
- Strong understanding of Health & Safety requirements for industrial installations and contractor management (risk assessment, method statements, permit-to-work principles).
- Customer-facing mindset and ability to support Sales on pre-sales deliverables (technical qualification, RFP responses, technical clarifications), translating complex topics into clear messages.
- Interest in progressively broadening exposure to commercial and offer-related topics (value drivers, contracting principles), while remaining primarily accountable for technical and H&S matters.
- Ability to work in a multi-partner environment and manage complex technical interfaces across countries.
European scope (initial focus on France, UK, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands).
Occasional travel required across these regions.
Education & Experience
- Engineering degree or equivalent technical qualification
- 8–15 years of experience in energy, industrial or infrastructure projects
- Experience covering the full asset lifecycle (development → construction → operation) is a strong asset
